What is a PhDr.? The Slovak and Czech “small doctorate” explained

Published 8 October 2026

The PhDr. (philosophiae doctor, often called the “small doctorate”) is a post-master's academic title used in Slovakia and Czechia. It is awarded to master's graduates who pass a rigorous examination (rigorosum) and defend a rigorosum thesis. It is not a PhD: there is no multi-year research programme or dissertation. Instead, the candidate shows that they have deepened their knowledge of the field by independent study and can apply it creatively.

Who can apply

Holders of a master's degree in philosophy, ethics or a related field. Whether the field is related is assessed by the programme guarantor; at VŠTE a free preliminary check runs before any payment. Typical applicants are teachers of ethics and social sciences, public administration staff, people in communication, PR and protocol, managers and people in the helping professions.

What the procedure involves

A thesis of 70–90 standard pages written under academic supervision, reviewed by one or two opponents, and an oral exam in two subjects. At VŠTE the whole procedure takes place online, including the defence and the exam, in Slovak or Czech. Applications are accepted all year round.

Recognition

The PhDr. is awarded by an accredited Slovak university in the EU. How it is used professionally depends on the country and the employer; check with them before applying. We make no promises we cannot back up.
